Medicine Foods: Grapes
Grapes are finally coming in to their own as not just a healthy food to eat,
but a critical one to eat if you want to prevent or cure a wide variety of
chronic health conditions, diseases, or problems. In fact, some people believe
that grapes will actually cure cancer, and scientific evidence is mounting
that grapes can prevent cancer too.
Eating grapes alone is beneficial to your health by themselves, but their
healing and health power is actually made stronger by eating other foods which
are known to be quite healthy for you too. Making garlic part of your regular
diet for instance, as well as nuts and other types of berries, will provide
your body with the strongest and best defenses against a variety of common
illnesses, diseases, and chronic health problems.
One of the biggest reasons grapes are so healthy for you though, is because
they are packed full of flavonoids. These are anti-oxidants which help protect
your body from the ravages of time. Flavonoids help protect healthy cells in
your body from being eaten by cancerous ones, and they help to kill cancer
cells too.
Evidence is mounting too, that grapes can help prevent or slow down heart
disease. Grapes gained attention with scientists in the early 1990's, because
yhet noticed that French people had much lower heart disease rates
than other countries did. This is referred to as the French Paradox, and it
was concluded that the difference might be because the French drink a bit of
red wine with their meals.
Since red wine is made from grapes, scientists started studying these fruits.
There have now been more than 300 studies which show that drinking red
wine or grape juice can actually help reduce the risk of heart disease over
time. In fact, the juice or wine appears to slow down or block completely the
artery clogging effects of eating fatty foods.
Many of the flavonoids found in grapes can also be found in green tea, black
tea and chocolate, but like all plant based foods, the concentrations are
different in each. Not many studies have been done to compare these foods
against each other for health benefits yet. Most of the studies have
focused on grapes specifically, and a lot has been learned.
Red grapes are found to be the healthiest, for instance, and the best kind to
eat for helping prevent heart disease or cancer. There are more flavonoids
concentrated in the skins too, but drinking grape juice is beneficial for
health and disease prevention. Eating grapes whole will not just give you
more nutrition and disease fighting, it will also give your body
additional fiber too.
While grapes have received the most scientific attention in recent years, berry
lovers will be glad to know that other berries are just as beneficial to your
health. Blueberries, for instance, have the highest potential cancer
fighting anti-oxidants in them, plus they're packed with vitamins and fiber.
Strawberries and blackberries are also super healthy foods, and blackberries
have as much as 8 grams of fiber in a one cup serving.
