Tea and Your Circulatory System
Another critical area of your body that needs health care and attention is the
circulatory system and blood vessels. Major health problems have become
prevalent in today's society, with high blood pressure, blocked arteries, and
poor blood flow due to blood vessels losing their natural and healthy
elasticity.
Tea is showing great promise as a solution in this area of medicine too
though. Green tea particularly, because of it's high concentration in the
catechin polyphenol known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), not only helps
kill cancer cells and prevent new ones from forming on healthy cells, but this
powerful antioxidant is also quite effective in lowering the LDL "bad"
cholesterol in the body, and it helps prevent development of abnormal blood
clots too. These abnormal blood clots in the veins and arteries are the
leading cause of strokes and heart attacks.
One clinical study on Black tea consumed over a long period of time actually
showed that participants who had coronary artery disease experienced restored
health and vitality to their blood vessels and functions. In fact, they
experienced improvements which made their blood vessels similar to those of
people who are healthy.
The ability of the inner lining of the blood vessels to dilate properly in
response to increased blood flow is called Endothelial function. Endothelial
functions decrease and degrade with age and various diseases and conditions.
One study showed that people who drank at least five cups of black tea each
day for four weeks experienced significant and consistent improvements to the
Endothelial dilation functions compared to the study participants who drank
just water for those four weeks.
Other studies have shown the the flavonoids in tea actually protect
low-density lipoproteins from oxidizing, plus they prevent the formation of
platelets and thromboxane in the blood vessels and arteries. All of these
things are very important to maintaining a healthy and robust circulatory
system in the body.
Many of the circulatory system research results are still considered
preliminary and some are thought to be inconclusive as well. These results
show such promise already though, that many new research studies are being
started so that new discoveries and details can be achieved.
